The original version came out in 2005, though it received several awards and made it to the Dallas Bestseller List, the reviews brought mistakes to my attention and I have revised, re edited and republished this book. I could have told this story but I am humbled to realize that I could not have written it.I was born in the area that this book has beginnings. This was difficult to read not because of editing or errors but because I could smell the air, see rows and rows of cotton, shotgun shacks as I read about Tallulah and Rebi etc.
As I read I shared what I was reading with a friend and was hesitant to go on but I could not stop. The sharecroppers, the joints off the beaten path, the migration to cities remind me of people I know. The people that are incredulous and unwilling to believe are people (much like my nieces and nephews) that are uninformed and never will be considering the school systems are working very hard to have slavery and post slavery deleted from school books.
If the chaos of baby momas, who's cousin to who, who went to jail or was killed on the way seems confusing and hard to keep track of, that means you can't imagine living in Louisiana not so very long ago; nor will you remember the restrooms for 'coloreds' or the part of the cafe designated for 'coloreds'.
I think the outraged should not be indignant but rather, cognizant. We walk on the backs of those before us.

I didn't realize this was a true story when I purchased it. The stories of the characters drew me in and made me feel their emotions over joys and sorrows. Really interesting.
This book contains so many misspellings, poor grammar, and misuse of words that it is difficult to read. It is described as the history of a Black family, from slavery to the modern era, and reads like a teenager's version of events, juiced up with enough sex and violence to sell. I kept asking myself why anyone would want to provide a detailed account of her ancestors' illegal activities, infidelities, and sexual exploits....... It was free, and I got what I paid for. I don't recommend it.
Kim Robinson has done a wonderful job compiling her family's history in The Roux in the Gumbo. The events are well organized, her characters well described. The reader definitely gets to know Kim's family. You'll take an emotional rollercoaster ride reading this one! I was especially impressed with the diligence of all of her family...and the clear message is to not ever give up! I'm sure everyone who reads this book will be reminded of a "Mother" in his or her own life. I enjoyed this book very much, and look forward to reading more from this author.
This is an awesome book - could NOT put it down!!!
It is a learning experience to read about the horrible things that were done to "blacks" throughout history. This family endured many violent and inhumane tortures. As a Northerner, I did not realize how much hatred and violence could be bestowed on this family. I like the book but I am only into 1930 at this point and I do not know how much more tragedy I can read about. I will finish it, as I am not a quitter. If you like to learn from others mistakes and get a feeling deep in your heart that you want to do things to make life easier for all, read it. Excellent job done by author on digging deep into her family history. Thank you Kim for sharing all your hard work.
The flow of the book was horrible. The book read more like a bunch of short stories on various subject matter. There was no consistency or balance. Some of the characters were not developed well. It was very rushed at the end. The editors should have done a better job.
This book was a sharp instrument, cutting straight to the heart, then to find out it was a true story was even more heart-wrenching. Thank you for this beautifully told story of family heartache and triumph. Well done Kim Robinson, well done.
